About Awwa

AWWA, an organization that has grown from strength to strength since its inception in 1966, embodies the Indian Army tradition of ‘Looking after one’s own and never leaving anyone behind’. AWWA is committed to the well-being of Army families, a volunteer organization that ‘Shares and Cares’ with empathy.

Our focus areas, in sync with the aspiring India of today, are inclusivity, gender empowerment, promoting self-reliance, and ensuring that we keep abreast of technological advancements. Ensuring the welfare of Veer Naris, whose husbands have made the supreme sacrifice, is our bounden duty and a primary objective. Herein, our efforts have been directed towards making them confident, capable, and independent. AWWA’s extended family includes the specially-abled and children with special needs.

AWWA came into existence on 23 August 1966, when it was registered under the Registration of Societies Act, 1860. The need for such an organization was felt as a consequence of the 1965 Indo-Pak War when, due to the large-scale mobilization of troops to border areas, there was a requirement for a support system for the soldiers’ families. Immediately, AWWA mobilized the Army wives to provide solace, support, and hope to those in need.

Come 1971, with war clouds imminent yet again, AWWA already had its support structure in place. It swiftly ensured the welfare of soldiers’ families and provided the requisite wherewithal for soldiers to believe that their families were in safe hands as they fought for the nation’s sovereignty.

Since its inception, AWWA has worked relentlessly for the welfare of spouses, children, and dependants of Army Personnel on the premise that a soldier performs best in his line of duty when he knows that his family back home is taken care of.

Since its inception, AWWA has grown to be the largest NGO in India.
